.... I just, don't know what to think about it.
The reception is so, huge. Unlike anything I've seen before getting larger scores then everything that came before it and quickly becoming literally everyone's favorite 3ds title. But I just don't feel the same way.
As a huge time Pokemon fan, I'm actually finding this installment I was going back to the least in my small 3ds collection of games. And that's very weird because I generally get incredibly hooked on Pokemon and it was actually the reason for me to purchase of 3ds.
This is just some personal self ventilation here. I just want to list out some thoughts on the game. Don't take this as a personal attack on the game or what not and just to let you know, you are fully allowed to love the game.
First, it's good. I absolutely love those visuals. Fully fleshed out 3d models that didn't just turn the Pokemon into 3d from sprite form, but practically redefined them entirely. The areas all look gorgeous and engaged myself into the atmosphere which I feel is important for an RPG. The interaction with your friends/rivals is very nice and the gyms are both well designed and fun to go through. 69 Pokemon, but they are all very good Pokemon. There wasn't a single one I couldn't find and say 'welp, what's the point of that one?' And fairy type to counter dragons and give poison types/steel type moves much more use? Yes!
But then, it starts going into elements I just can't take a liking to. First off, the story. Now, the story is not bad, in fact, it's good! But this is the problem, the pacing is non-existent! The problem actually was that it was good, because it felt like missed opportunity that it was only given attention for about 5% of the entire game. In fact, this is the source of most my negative opinion on the game, I see things that could have been great, but they weren't as great as they could have been. Like the roster, yes, I praised the roster, but at the same time.... 69, only 69!? Before I make a cock joke, lemme explain this. Yes, they're all very good, but I'm looking at how underwhelming the number is here. The thing is is that I can see the potential for more Pokemon, I can see Gamefreak with the ideas, they just weren't made. Just take a step back real quick, to gen 5. 156 new Pokemon. All of which were either a.) visually astonishing (Samurott, Scolipede, Zebstrika, Krookodile) or b.) Bursting with creative concepts/origins (Cinccino, Reshiram/Zekrom, Chandelure) The crime organization was awful as well. Completely lacks in charm and personality with the exception of Lysandre.
As far as Mega evos, same problem, a missed opportunity to make something great. The idea sounds good on paper, make some Pokemon that were simply outclassed stronger and give them a fighting chance while at the same time give them some limitation to keep them from being overpowered. But there was one crucial problem. They gave it to Pokemon that don't freaking need it! Mega Blaziken!? Mega Mewtwo!? Mega Gengar!? Mega Tyranitar!? Just, no! Because of this, most of the OP ones are always going to be used and the others are going to rot in a corner because they aren't worth it! Also, for something that's introduced as some 'Game changing mechanic' there is very little change to the core gameplay. Just "OMG, Pokemon have better stats now" There was also a lot of bias towards this concept. Most of the Pokemon given megas were just fan-favorites. Absolutly no Unova Pokemon? They could have made Emboar come from a bulky attacker, to a fast, bulky attacker and giving it balance to it's fire/fighting counterparts, but instead, Blaziken gets a boost to it's already broken capabilities.
Now don't take it the wrong way, I still love the game. But I just can't help but notice something while playing it. Instead of trying new ideas, it seems like they were way to focused on pleasing the old fans instead with the ability to choose one of the Kanto starters, the overly simplistic team organization, lack of story to comprehend, and hardly any new things to use and experiment with.
Still a great game and I don't regret the purchase, but I'd rather be playing Pokemon Black any day of the weak. What I want out of Pokemon is a story I can have fun with (it doesn't have to be good or deep, just fun as in well paced and enjoyable) a cast of characters that I can enjoy, and enjoyable environments. All the things that makes me want to actually do the 'role play' in 'role playing game'
